Scholarly study which follows "Women Writers 1621-1744, The Female Pen, Volume I. Chapters include The Oriental Novel, The Novel of Sentiment and Sensibility, The Domestic Novel-The Novel of Manners ( Fanny Burney ), The Gothic Novel, The Didactic Novel, and a final chapter on Jane Austen. This last chapter contains an entertaining comparison of Austen's heroines; Fanny Price and Emma, and why some are more enduring in their foolishness. Extensive bibliography and Index. The book itself is still quite clean and tight, gray boards with cobalt-blue quarter spine, off-setting to endpapers from acidic paper of dust jacket, former owner name inked under jacket flap ( does not show ), corners bumped, dust jacket toned, with small chips and four small closed tears, square piece clipped out at bottom front flap where price would be, now protected in a clear, archival, Brodart cover. Very interesting and collectible book.
